Bob: Who do you like in the National Championship game?
Matt: I like the Crimson Tide, especially after it dominated Florida. The Gators have one of the best and fastest defenses in the country and Alabama not only whipped them on the ground, even beating them on the perimeter, but also destroyed them through the air. If Greg McElroy just gets close to the MVP performance he had in the SEC Championship Game, Alabama may win going away. Oh, did I mention the Tide’s defense? Nebraska, Oklahoma and even Oklahoma St. held Texas to 275 yards or less on offense, and ‘Bama’s defense is better than any of those. It’s the best in the country. Colt McCoy may simply vanish in this game.
Bob: Besides the National Championship Game, which Bowl do you think will be the most compelling
Matt: I think it will be the Florida/Cincinnati matchup in the Sugar Bowl. It will be interesting to see just how Florida responds to missing out on its top two goals (SEC Championship and National Championship) after running the table in the regular season for the first time in program history. I think the Boise St. /TCU Fiesta Bowl will be a great game from a viewership perspective. Are these teams interesting in and of themselves or just as an underdog foil in a matchup with a big coalition conference team? It may not be compelling, but how about USC/Boston College in the Emerald Bowl. Prior to the start of the season, did anyone prediction the men of Troy would end up in this game?
Bob: Do you think college football will have a playoff anytime soon?
Matt: Aside from the longstanding relationships and the power that those relationships convey within the existing bowl system, not to mention the fact that the "system" appears to have worked this season in spite of the glut of unbeaten teams, there is also this to consider: the networks have invested a substantial amount of money in regular season games and they don’t want anything to undermine the value of those games. A playoff is perceived to do just that, ergo, no playoffs anytime soon, I’m afraid.
Bob: Heisman Trophy aside, who do you feel was the best player in college football this season?
Matt: Hmm, that’s a tough one. Boise St.’s Kellen Moore may be a system guy, but wow his stats are awfully impressive. But who did those stats come against? Case Keenum had nutty numbers as well. I would make a case for one player from either side of the ball that contributed in a variety of ways. On the offensive side, CJ Spiller’s rushing/receiving/return make him the best all purpose player in country and one of the best in college football history. On the defensive side, Ndomukong Suh, whose unfairly gifted physically and has the desire and instinctive to match, is the best, and may be the best football player in the game. He is a complete defensive lineman in every sense. I defy anyone to find a weakness in his game. It’s gross!
Bob: Can Tim Tebow play quarterback at the next level?
Matt: I don't see Tebow as an every down type player at quarterback, the kind of player that can throw all the passes that need to be fitted into tight windows. But he may be the ultimate short yardage/goal line situational quarterback, given the increased use of the single wing/wildcat personnel grouping and formations. Tebow has been a wildcat since Day One in that offense.
